Andrea J. Boon, M.D.

Andrea J. Boon, M.D., is a Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Department of Neurology. Her clinical focus is in musculoskeletal medicine and in clinical neurophysiology (diagnosis of nerve and muscle disease).

• Conservative management of musculoskeletal disorders, including arthritis, tendinopathy
• Rehabilitation management of neuromuscular disorders
• Promoting patients' understanding of the underlying cause of their musculoskeletal symptoms
• Educating and empowering patients to become partners in managing their symptoms
• Ultrasound-guided joint injection with corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid and platelet rich plasma
• Ultrasound- and/or EMG-guided injections of botulinum toxin for spasticity management

In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Boon is active in research and education, providing mentorship to residents and fellows, and has spearheaded the incorporation of neuromuscular ultrasound into the Mayo EMG lab practice. Her current research focus is on developing a painless method of detecting and following neuromuscular disease (such as Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and myopathy) using ultrasound, and continues to develop the role of diagnostic ultrasound in diaphragm disorders. She lectures nationally and internationally and publishes frequently in scientific journals.
