وفيما يلي بعض الأمثلة:

  • الكبد الاصطناعي الحيوي. يساعد هذا الجهاز المرضى أثناء انتظارهم للحصول على الكبد المتبرَّع بها. طوّر الأطباء والباحثون في مايو كلينك الأكباد الاصطناعية الحيوية، وفيها تُستخدم خلايا حية من أكباد الخنازير لتنقية دم المريض، وهي مماثلة لعملية غسيل الكلى. ويُجرى الآن اختبار الجهاز قبل توفيره في العيادات والمستشفيات.
  • تصوير المرونة بالرنين المغناطيسي. طوَّر الأطباء والباحثون في مايو كلينك هذه التقنية المبتكرة كوسيلة غير باضعة لفحص تندّب الكبد. وفي يوم من الأيام، قد تقلل هذه التقنية من الحاجة إلى خزعات الكبد لدى الأشخاص المصابين بأمراض الكبد.
  • الأدوية الكابتة للمناعة. يدرس هذا البحث قدرة جزء الكبد المُتبرَّع بها على حماية الأعضاء الأخرى المزروعة معه في الوقت نفسه. يساعد هذا في تحسين فرص النجاح للأشخاص الذين يتلقون عمليات زراعة أعضاء متعددة.
  • تعظيم الاستفادة من التبرع بالأعضاء. يعمل الباحثون في مايو كلينك على تطوير طرق حفظ مبتكَرة تجعل المزيد من الأكباد المتبرَّع بها قابلةً للاستخدام في عملية الزراعة، ما يساعد في زيادة عدد الأعضاء المتاحة للزراعة.
  • العلاجات بالخلايا لمرض الكبد. يقدِّم هذا البحث علاجات جديدة محتملة للعديد من أمراض الكبد، وقد يحسن نجاح عملية زراعة الكبد.
  • نظام الفرز. اقترح باحثو مايو كلينك نموذج المرحلة النهائية لمرض الكبد (MELD) وأعدّوه واختبروه. ويساعد هذا النظام في تحديد من له الأولوية في الخضوع لعملية الزراعة استنادًا إلى شدة المرض ومدى الحاجة المُلحّة إلى عملية الزراعة.
