Biographical summary
Dominika Jegen, M.D., M.A., CCFP(EM), FCFP, DABFM, is a family physician at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She practices comprehensive, full-scope family medicine across the lifespan, including prenatal and obstetric care, preventive care, acute and chronic disease management, and a broad range of office-based procedures. Alongside her clinical practice, she is actively engaged in research, medical education, writing, and academic scholarship.
Born in Poland and raised in Germany and Canada, Dr. Jegen completed undergraduate degrees in Biology and Sociology and a master's degree in Medical Sociology before earning her medical degree from the University of Calgary. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.
Her career has taken her through remarkably diverse clinical settings. Following residency, she spent four years practicing remote medicine in Northern Canada, including communities in Ontario, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. She subsequently cared for underserved rural communities in Mississippi and served as a Clinical Director in Seattle, where she worked with a predominantly immigrant and multicultural patient population. These experiences continue to shape her interests in rural and underserved health, health disparities, access to care, and the social and environmental determinants of health.
Dr. Jegen's current research focuses particularly on environmental health and the intersection of environmental exposures, primary care, and community health. Her work on private well-water safety examines how primary care and community partnerships can help identify environmental risks and translate evidence into practical interventions for patients and populations.
She is actively involved in medical education and currently teaches and mentors medical students and residents. She continues to write and present her clinical, research, and educational work nationally and internationally. Dr. Jegen has authored numerous medical publications and has served as first author on peer-reviewed publications in American Family Physician, Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, Canadian Family Physician, and Annals of Family Medicine. Her academic work spans clinical medicine, primary care, environmental health, medical education, and case-based and evidence-based scholarship.
Clinically, Dr. Jegen values the breadth and continuity of family medicine — the opportunity to care for patients across different stages of life, address both immediate concerns and long-term health, and develop lasting relationships with patients and families. Her approach combines evidence-based medicine with attention to each patient's circumstances, priorities, and lived experience.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Jegen enjoys academic and medical writing, international travel, concerts, and car shows. An avid traveler, she has visited countries throughout the world and hopes to soon reach 100. She is married and shares her home with a Doberman Pinscher and a royal python.
