Biographical summary
Vidit Sharma, M.D., M.S., is a urologic oncologist and surgeon scientist with expertise in cancers of urinary organs. He attended Northwestern University for both undergraduate and medical education through the Honors Program in Medical Education. He then completed residency at Mayo Clinic (Rochester) and was awarded the prestigious Mayo Foundation Scholar award. He then completed fellowship in Urologic Oncology through a combined program at UCLA and Mayo Clinic Rochester. While at UCLA, Dr. Sharma was a VA Health Services Research Scholar and obtained a Masters Degree in Health Services Research.
Dr. Sharma is the director of the Mayo Clinic Nephrectomy Registry, and he has a clinical interest in advanced renal tumors that are either large or complex. He specializes in both open surgical and robotic surgical approaches for these tumors, including those that may require a retroperitoneal lymph node dissection, and he has numerous research projects through the registry. He also has research and clinical expertise for testicular and penile tumors, including those requiring retroperitoneal lymph node dissections or inguinal lymph node dissections. In addition, he looks at prostate cancer from both a surgical and research lens, focusing on optimizing patient choice and surgical outcomes. He offers both robotic and open radical prostatectomies.
Lastly, Dr. Sharma has an interest in bladder preservation for advanced bladder tumors, and he is studying the impacts of partial bladder removal instead of whole bladder removal on well selected patients. Otherwise, he also offers whole bladder removal for patients that are better suited for this option.

Interests
- Advanced kidney tumors that are large or involving other organs such as lymph nodes or the vena cava.
- Complex tumors requiring kidney preservation.
- Prostate cancers requiring either open or robotic prostatectomy. I use the hood sparing technique for robotic procedures.
- Retroperitoneal lymph node dissections for testicular cancers and kidney cancers.
- Bladder and upper tract urothelial cancers that require surgical removal. I have research studies that are studying the impact of bladder sparing through partial bladder removal on well selected patients.
- Penile cancers that are invading into the deeper tissues of the penis or those that require a groin lymph node dissection.
