Dejana Popovic, Ph.D.

Dr. Dejana Popovic is a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Her clinical and academic work focuses on preventive cardiology, stress testing, cardiac rehabilitation and sports cardiology, fields in which she has been active since 2001.

Dr. Popovic graduated from the University of Belgrade School of Medicine, where she subsequently completed both her MSc and PhD in cardiology. Alongside her academic advancement, she completed residency training in internal medicine and fellowship training in cardiology, and went on to become a consultant cardiologist at the University Clinical Center of Serbia. She also served as a member of the national pulmonary hypertension and heart failure team.

She has played a key role in establishing multiple cardiopulmonary exercise testing laboratories and directs advanced international training programs in cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Dr. Popovic is a frequent invited speaker and faculty member at national and international scientific meetings and is widely recognized for her dedication to education, mentorship, and physician training.

Her research portfolio includes both clinical trials and translational research, with a particular focus on the application of artificial intelligence to improve cardiovascular risk prediction and clinical decision-making. Her academic interests include cardiopulmonary exercise testing in complex cardiovascular disease, sports and exercise cardiology, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, and preventive cardiology, with a special emphasis on integrating physiologic, imaging, and other digital data to better understand disease mechanisms and personalize care.

Dr. Popovic is a Fulbright award recipient, a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, a member of the ESC Working Group on Myocardial and Pericardial Diseases, and President of the Serbian Society for Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases.
