السُّعال هو استجابة جسدك لشيء يسبِّب تهيُّج حَلْقك أو ممراتك الهوائية. يستثير مسبِّب التهيُّج النهايات العصبية التي بدورها ترسل رسائل للدماغ. يحثُّ الدماغ عندها عضلات الصدر والبطن لدفع الهواء من رئتيك ودفع الجسم المسبب للتهيُّج للخارج.

السُّعال من وقتٍ إلى آخر أمر طبيعي وصحي. لكن السُّعال الذي يستمر لعدة أسابيع، أو الذي يصاحبه مخاط عديم اللون أو دامٍ، قد يشير إلى وجود مشكلة صحية تحتاج إلى رعاية طبية.

في بعض الأحيان، يكون السُّعال قويًّا جدًّا. ويمكن للسُّعال المستمر العنيف أن يسبِّب تهيُّج الرئتين؛ ومن ثم يسبِّب المزيد من السعال. كما أنه يكون مجهِدًا بشدة ويسبِّب الأرق والدوار أو الإعياء والصداع وسلس البول والقيء، وحتى انكسار بعض الأضلاع.
