Biographical summary
Dr. Susanne Warner specializes in liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and bile duct surgery. Her primary professional goal is to improve life for patients with cancers affecting the liver and pancreas. To this end, she is innovating on three fronts:
1. Scientifically by investigating the potential of oncolytic (cancer-killing) viruses to treat aggressive malignancies. 2. Operatively by expanding indications for minimally invasive and robotic surgery. 3. Through humanities research studying surgeon-patient communication along with the emotional and spiritual impacts of major surgery.
Dr. Warner completed her general surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic Arizona campus. During residency, she also completed a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City. After residency, she completed a clinical fellowship in Hepatopancreatobiliary and Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Michigan before accepting her first job at City of Hope in the Los Angeles area. During her 6 years of practice in California, Dr. Warner built on thriving surgical and scientific programs and took pride in educating the next generation of Surgical Oncologists. Now having re-joined the Mayo Clinic, she is now thrilled to continue her career as a surgeon-scientist and educator.
Raised in Texas, Dr. Warner is enjoying life with cooler temperatures and is always receptive to winter sport recommendations. When she is not working, Dr. Warner enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children exercising, camping, hiking, and baking.
