As part of the Mayo Clinic Children's Center, the Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital offers supportive services to enhance the medical experience and reduce the stress of a child being treated for a medical condition.
Care conferences gather family members and members of your multispecialty healthcare team to discuss and plan your child's care. Conferences are helpful when care requires intervention by many different specialists. Conference also are helpful when planning discharge or when coordinating care with community-based resources.
Family support space is available within each patient care unit. These spaces include kitchens, laundry facilities, lounge areas, sleep rooms and showers.
Child life specialists, available to you and your child while in the hospital, address the individual needs of patients and their families. The Child Life Program offers:
- Developmentally appropriate information about medical procedures, including coping and diversion skills.
- Play opportunities and activities to support growth and development, including video and computer games, as well as daily crafts and special evening and holiday activities.
- Support during medical procedures, including "comfort holds" such as hand-holding and embraces anytime.
- Advocacy for family-centered care.
Compass is a program that provides comprehensive supportive care to infants, children and teenagers with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses. Care focuses on improving the quality of your child's life while minimizing both pain and distressing symptoms. Learn more about the Compass team.
