Dr. Tapias Vargas is a Thoracic Surgeon, with particular interest in thoracic oncology, minimally invasive surgery including robotic thoracic surgery, and airway surgery. His clinical focus includes:

  • Expertise in management and robotic minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of early and locally advanced lung cancer
  • Expertise in management and robotic minimally invasive surgery in the treatment of esophageal cancer
  • Robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery in the management of mediastinal tumors, gastroesophageal reflux, hiatal hernias, achalasia, esophageal diverticula, hyperhidrosis and other diseases of the chest.

The needs of the patients always come first in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Tapias Vargas makes an effort to explain diseases and proposed treatments in an honest yet compassionate way that is easy to understand, allowing his patients can make informed decisions.

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Tapias Vargas is active in research and educational activities. He researches factors that influence the treatment, outcomes and survivorship of patients with thoracic malignancies, such as lung and esophageal cancers. He has a particular interest in the application and results of minimally invasive surgery techniques, including robotic surgery in complex operations such as esophagectomies.
