Dr. Pillai's expertise is in functional and physiologic MR imaging, particularly as applied to brain tumors and presurgical brain mapping as well as dementia imaging. This includes functional MRI for presurgical brain mapping, cerebrovascular reactivity mapping for neurovascular uncoupling assessment and other clinical applications, and diffusion and perfusion MRI. Dr. Pillai has published three books in these areas, and has a history of research funding (overall more than 15 grants as PI, co-PI or co-I) from NIH, industry and private foundations in these areas as well as over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications and multiple editorial board memberships. Dr. Pillai was Director of Functional MRI at Johns Hopkins Hospital for the past 15 years as well as Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins prior to starting at Mayo Clinic in September 2022. He maintains an Adjunct Professor appointment in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. He is interested in promoting clinical translation of emerging advanced functional/physiologic MRI technology as well as ultra-high field MRI (7T) here at Mayo Clinic Rochester as well as continuing to establish national standards in these fields. He has most recently been involved in both basic and advanced neuroimaging of dementia here at Mayo.
