Biographical summary
Amit Merchea, M.D., is a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon with a special interest in primary and recurrent colorectal cancer and minimally invasive, robotic surgery. He is the Vice Chair of
Clinical Practice for the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida and an Associate Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
His clinical focus includes:
- Primary and recurrent colon and rectal cancer
- Young-onset colorectal cancer
- Presacral and complex pelvic tumors
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Robotic surgery
Dr. Merchea earned his medical degree from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his general surgery and colorectal surgery training at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in
Rochester, Minnesota.
He has a patient-centric approach to care. He considers unique and individualized care plans for each patient and strives to help patients get through what may be a difficult path.
In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Merchea is active in education and research. He is widely published and has research interests in peritoneal cancer and PIPAC (Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy).
