Biographical summary
Alex Cortez, M.D., completed his general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati, followed by a transplant surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. He specializes in liver and kidney transplantation, with particular interest in transplant outcomes and strategies to responsibly expand the donor pool, including the thoughtful use of marginal organs.
Dr. Cortez is deeply committed to surgical education and serves as fellowship director for transplant surgery. His educational research spans a wide range of topics involving general surgery residents and transplant fellows, with a focus on advancing modern surgical training, assessment, and competency development. Alongside his educational work, he remains active in clinical outcomes research within transplantation.
He is also contributing to the growth of robotic surgery within the transplant center at Mayo Clinic, helping advance robotic approaches for hernia repair and cholecystectomy in transplant recipients, as well as robotic kidney transplantation.
