Training and requirements

Mayo Clinic's campuses in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona, offer four volunteer programs:

  1. Adult Volunteer Program. For individuals age 18 and older who are not enrolled in school.
  2. High School Volunteer Program. Open to those ages 15 to 17, this eight-week program runs exclusively during the summer months of June and July.
  3. College Volunteer Program. For students ages 18 to 23 who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. This eight-week program also takes place in June and July.
  4. Caring Canines Program. For volunteers who work with therapy dogs.

To prepare for your role as a volunteer, you will need to:

  • Participate in an interview.
  • Complete an Occupational Health visit (covered by Mayo Clinic), which includes a blood test for tuberculosis and verification of vaccinations for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and chickenpox (varicella).
  • Attend a general orientation.
  • Undergo one-on-one training in your assigned service area.

Requirements

Adult volunteers at Mayo Clinic must:

  • Commit to serving a minimum of four hours a week.
  • Fulfill a minimum service commitment of six months (100 hours) a year.
  • Demonstrate dependability.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Be adaptable and flexible.
