High School Student Summer Volunteer Program

Volunteering as a student is a fantastic way to gain experience, strengthen your resume and enhance your college application. It also allows you to develop new skills and meet new people. Beyond the personal benefits, volunteering is about giving back to your community. Student volunteers bring fresh perspectives and energy to our clinics, making the experience enjoyable for both volunteers and staff.

For high school students interested in healthcare careers, volunteering at Mayo Clinic provides a unique chance to interact with patients and healthcare professionals. You'll get firsthand insight into how a large medical center functions.

This eight-week program runs from Monday, June 2, 2025, to Friday, July 25, 2025.

The program aims to serve Mayo Clinic employees and, ultimately, patients. While clinical exposure and shadowing hospital staff are not part of the program, volunteers will learn about the healthcare environment through service assignments involving both nonpatient and patient interactions.

Eligibility

To qualify for the program, students must:

  • Be between ages 15 and 18 as of May 1, 2025.
  • Not yet be enrolled in college.
  • Commit to assigned four-hour shifts each week during regular business hours (Monday through Friday) during the entire eight-week service period from June 2 to July 25, 2025. This equals 36 hours of volunteer service over the summer, with no more than 12 hours a week.
  • Commit to eight weeks of service from June 2 to July 25, 2025.
  • Able to attend the mandatory virtual interview (date to be determined).
  • Able to attend the mandatory in-person orientation (date to be determined).

Application requirements

  1. Attend all mandatory dates and meet program requirements.
  2. Complete all application documents.
  3. Provide current vaccination records, including:
    • COVID-19 (if available).
    • Influenza (if available).
    • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR).
    • Chickenpox (Varicella).
  4. Complete a blood test for tuberculosis screening (provided by Mayo Clinic).

Steps to become a volunteer

  1. Attend a mandatory virtual information session
    High school applicants and their parent or guardian are required to attend a mandatory virtual information session. Reservations are required.
    • Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. OR
    • Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
    Space is limited to 30 participants per session, and reservations are required. Visit our SignUpGenius page to register.
  2. Complete the volunteer application form
    Applications will be available only after attending the information session. Please note:
    • You must have an email account that you check regularly.
    • Completed applications for the 2025 High School Student Summer Volunteer Program must be submitted by 5 p.m., Friday, March 7, 2025. Details on how to submit will be provided at the information session.
    • Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
    • Submission of an application does not guarantee placement in the program.
  3. Interview
    Upon submitting your application, if it is accepted, you will receive an email inviting you to a virtual interview. During the interview, you will receive more information about the program and next steps.
  4. Complete a health screening
    Mayo Clinic requires all volunteers to pass a health screening, which includes:
    • Providing current vaccination records (including COVID-19 and influenza if available).
    • Complete a blood test for tuberculosis screening (provided by Mayo Clinic).
  5. Volunteer onboarding
    If accepted, you will need to attend an in-person orientation. This will be followed by a mandatory service area training session at either the Scottsdale campus of Mayo Clinic or the Phoenix campus of Mayo Clinic in Arizona. All volunteers must agree to adhere to Mayo Clinic's standards of behavior.
  6. After orientation
    Following orientation, all students must attend an in-person service area training session at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, either at the Scottsdale campus or the Phoenix campus.

Verification of Hours

Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a report verifying your total hours volunteered, the time period and your service area.
