Dr. Rihal is a board-certified cardiologist with subspecialty certification in interventional cardiology. Dr. Rihal graduated from the University of Manitoba, and completed all his postgraduate training at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. He was a faculty member at McMaster University, and has been on staff at Mayo for 25 years. Dr. Rihal specializes in seeing patients with complex heart disease and focuses on providing minimally invasive therapies for patients with valve and structural heart disease. He has pioneered and developed many of these procedures in collaboration with the team at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Rihal's clinical practice and innovative research focuses on the treatment of patients with valvular heart disease and coronary artery disease. He has contributed over 600 papers in the scientific literature.

Specific procedures Dr. Rihal performs include:

  • paravalvular leak closure
  • TAVR
  • transseptal mitral valve replacement
  • mitral edge to edge repair (clip and pascal)
  • mechanical circulatory support devices
  • balloon valvuloplasty
  • percutaneous balloon and stents

Dr. Rihal was director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory from 2003 to 2010, and Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine from 2010 to 2017. He is frequently invited nationally and internationally to speak at meetings and to teach procedure techniques. He has been recognized for being in the 99th percentile of patient feedback scores.

Dr. Rihal currently is a member of the Board of Trustees of Mayo Clinic and chairs the Mayo People and Culture committee, partnering with the CHRO on all aspects of workforce development. He has had further training in business from the Carlson school of management, the University of Oxford, and Harvard Business School.
