At the Mayo Clinic Center for Regenerative Biotherapeutics, researchers work on ways to regenerate the cells that produce insulin (beta cells). They are working on ways to enhance the body's natural ability to regenerate these cells, as well as ways to regenerate beta cells in the lab. In the Mayo Clinic Artificial Pancreas Laboratory, researchers are working on expanding current closed-loop systems to some people, such as pregnant women with type 1 diabetes and people older than age 65. They're studying how to improve current closed-loop systems in partnership with industry sponsors. Researchers also investigate mechanisms responsible for abnormal glucose metabolism in people with diabetes and prediabetes. Research can help find out the cause of diabetes and related disorders and develop new treatments. The patient comes first. So the mission and research here is to advance how we can best help the patient, how to make sure the patient comes first in care. So in many ways, it's a cycle. It can start with as simple as an idea worked on in a laboratory, brought to the patient bedside, and if everything goes right — and let's say it's helpful or beneficial — then brought on as a standard approach. And I think that is one of the unique characteristics of Mayo's approach to research — that patient-centeredness — that really helps to put it in its own spotlight.
