Doctors discussing imaging test results

Mayo Clinic doctors and scientists are continually working to improve breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Mayo Clinic researchers are involved in many studies related to breast cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Mayo Clinic doctors often inform eligible patients about opportunities to participate in research studies and clinical trials related to advancements in the treatment of breast cancer.

Areas of research include:

  • Analyzing the genetic makeup of breast cancer cells to understand how DNA changes affect response to cancer treatments and personalize treatment options.
  • Harnessing the power of viruses to treat noninvasive breast cancer, triple-negative breast cancer and metastatic breast cancer.
  • Innovative breast imaging techniques, such as dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, contrast-enhanced digital mammography and molecular breast imaging.
  • Making treatment safer using new technology, such as proton beam therapy to shape radiation beams that reach left-sided breast cancer but spare the heart.
  • Refinement of the list of genes that are involved in the development of breast cancer to improve the use of genetic testing.

Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center is one of a select group of facilities that received a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant for breast cancer research from the U.S. National Cancer Institute. Learn more about the Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer SPORE.
