Musculoskeletal Care Overview

Almost everyone has had muscle aches and pains every now and then. Pain may occur after an acute injury or from conditions such as chronic degenerative arthritis. Although musculoskeletal pain often goes away on its own, at times you will need to see a specialist who has been trained in evaluating joint, bone, cartilage, ligament, tendon and muscle issues.

Mayo Clinic's nationally ranked Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) in Rochester, Minnesota, has over 40 specially trained providers, with more at the campuses in Arizona and Florida and at multiple Mayo Clinic Health System campuses. Each of our providers is specifically trained in identifying and treating musculoskeletal injuries and conditions, as well as advising on preventive care. Mayo Clinic PM&R providers are world-renowned experts in:

  • Stress- or exercise-induced injuries.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Tendon and muscle injuries.
  • Limited motion and stiffness.
  • Repetitive use or overuse injuries.
  • Age-induced degenerative arthritis.
  • Cartilage and ligament injuries.

The right care, just for you

You may be referred to a PM&R physician for a range of reasons, such as a muscle strain, an injury or age-related degenerative changes. Regardless of the cause, our specialists work with you to come up with a nonsurgical plan of care that fits your life and your goals. You are part of the plan every step of the way. Our providers work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, recreation therapists, procedural technicians and our own musculoskeletal nursing team. Your medical plan might include:

  • Identifying risk factors for specific injuries.
  • Recovery after injury.
  • Restoring function.
  • Nonsurgical options for recovery and return to activity.
  • Therapeutic procedures and injections.
  • Assistive devices or a brace for mobility and safety.
  • Exercise programs to reduce injury and improve condition.
