Community outreach and engagement
Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center works closely with the diverse communities we serve to understand each one's unique cancer burden. This includes which cancers occur most often and the community's most common risk factors. Through the Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) Office, we have forged strong ties to our communities in Arizona, Florida and the Midwest to ensure our research and care are tailored to address those burdens.
Our goals:
- Ensure cancer research addresses the exact needs of the communities we serve.
- Reduce the burdens of cancer in our communities through evidence-based prevention techniques and treatments.
- Engage everyone so the people who participate in our research are truly representative of our communities.
- Share research findings discovered in our communities locally, nationally and around the world.
We have more than 200 partnerships with faith-based organizations, community-based organizations, patient advocacy groups and health departments. Our collaborators help develop community-based outreach programming to reduce cancer burden and prioritize research that addresses community need, ensuring that research is inclusive and reflects the diversity of our neighborhoods.
Addressing cancer burden in our communities
Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center works with the communities we serve to address their unique cancer burdens. Together, we tailor strategies proved to impact all areas of cancer, from prevention through survivorship. With our community partners, we are solving problems that contribute to health disparities and providing resources to help people make a difference in their communities.
Community advisory boards
To address the specific cancer needs of each community we serve, Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center is guided by community advisory boards made up of people with diverse backgrounds and interests. Board members advise our cancer experts and help prioritize cancer activities, such as research, prevention and clinical care.
Our communities
As a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center with three sites, Mayo Clinic serves communities in Arizona, Florida and the Midwest. These defined geographic areas, called catchment areas, are where most of our patients with cancer live.
Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center continually evaluates our catchment areas to understand how certain cancer types impact populations in each area. Community partners then help us tailor our research to reduce the specific burdens of cancer that our community members experience.
