Hematopathology
The Division of Hematopathology includes six subspecialty laboratories that provide hematology, homeostasis and thrombosis testing services as well as expert consultation services for the laboratory diagnosis of hematologic diseases.
The division serves both Mayo Clinic physicians and Mayo Clinic Laboratories clients through optimal testing and interpreting results to provide accurate diagnoses and relevant prognostic information. Tests are used to detect a broad gamut of hematologic diseases, including lymphomas, leukemias, plasma cell dyscrasias, hemoglobinopathies, red blood cell enzyme deficiencies, bleeding diatheses and hypercoagulable states.
More than 20 physicians and nearly 150 laboratory professionals perform the full range of testing approaches, from traditional microscopy to molecular and flow cytometric analyses.
Laboratories
The six subspecialty laboratories of the Division of Hematopathology are:
Cell Kinetics uses multicolor flow cytometry to immunophenotypically detect and characterize neoplastic hematolymphoid cells.
Metabolic Hematology detects abnormal hemoglobins (e.g., sickle cell disease), red blood cell enzyme deficiencies (e.g., G-6-PD) and cytoskeletal abnormalities (e.g., hereditary spherocytosis) and also screens for and characterizes thalassemias.
Molecular Hematopathology analyzes RNA or DNA to detect and quantify genetic abnormalities useful in the diagnosis and monitoring of hematologic malignancies.
Hematopathology Morphology performs complete blood counts (CBC) and analyzes cellular morphology in peripheral blood and some body fluids. The laboratory also performs a wide range of cytochemical stains.
Special Coagulation performs testing to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients who may have bleeding or clotting disorders.
Special DNA Coagulation concentrates on the identification of genetic abnormalities associated with hereditary bleeding and clotting disorders.
