Dr. Wallace completed medical school at Duke University and subsequently internal medicine and gastroenterology fellowship at Harvard Medical School's Brigham and Women's Hospital. He completed advanced endoscopic training at the Medical University of South Carolina under the mentor ship of Dr. Peter Cotton and Dr. Robert Hawes. He has worked at the Mayo Clinic since 2003 advancing to the rank of Professor of Medicine in 2007. His main clinical and research interest focus on how we can detect gastrointestinal cancers at their earliest most curable form. This includes seminal research on early detection of pancreatic cancer using advanced imaging and biomarker technologies. It also includes early detection of esophageal and colorectal cancer using similar advanced imaging capabilities. These were translated clinically into the use of technologies such as optically enhanced endoscopy, artificial intelligence enhanced colonoscopy and CT and MRI imaging. These are also leading to therapeutic advances such as the endoscopic resection of Barrett's esophagus associated cancer and large colorectal polyps.
