Biographical summary
Philip J. Spencer, M.D., is a Senior Associate Consultant in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery specializing in adult cardiac surgery, heart & lung transplantation, and mechanical support. He attended Harvard Medical School and completed training in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He had subspecialty training in heart and lung transplant and mechanical support at the Duke University Medical Center before joining Mayo Clinic as faculty.
Dr. Spencer's clinical interests include:
- Acute and durable mechanical circulatory support, including ECMO and ventricular assist devices
- End-stage heart and lung failure surgery, with a special interest in heart and lung transplantation
- Coronary artery bypass grafting, with emphasis in arterial revascularization
- Surgical treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary disease
- Surgical treatment of endocarditis
His research interests include heart and lung transplantation outcomes, novel organ preservation, donation after circulatory death, as well as strategies for effective surgical education.
