Nicole M. Loo, M.D.

My name is Nicole Loo, I'm a transplant hepatologist at Mayo Clinic in Florida. I take care of liver patients before and after their transplant. I feel like the liver field chose me and this is why I became a Dr. When I was in high school, my mother was diagnosed with hepatitis C from a blood transfusion she received in the 70s and this was a complete shock to our family. Fast-forward, in college, I received a call from my father out of the blue that he was diagnosed with hepatitis B. And so because of my parents and their experiences, I felt like the liver field was the way that I could honor them. Each day I'm humbled by medicine and the dilemmas and decisions that we have to make, they're not always a black and white answer. I was trained at Mayo Clinic and they've instilled in us from day one that the needs of the patient come first. And what that means is that we do our very best to make sure that the concerns and needs of the patients are addressed, that we discussed them. And we have shared decision-making to make sure we come up with the best solution at the end of the day.
