Biographical summary
Kevin Koo, M.D., M.P.H., is a urologist and Associate Professor of Urology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He specializes in the medical and surgical management of urinary stone disease and is Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Stone Clinic at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Dr. Koo's expertise includes endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery for urinary tract stones, metabolic stone evaluation, and transplant kidney stones. His research encompasses kidney stone pathophysiology, technology development, surgical education, and surgical quality improvement.
Dr. Koo is a graduate of Yale School of Medicine and completed urology residency at Dartmouth and endourology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. He holds master's degrees from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the University of Cambridge. He serves as a faculty member and Director of quality improvement education in the urology residency and endourology
fellowship programs at Mayo Clinic. He is a Senior Fellow in the Mayo Clinic Academy of Academic Excellence for his work advancing surgical simulation and education science.
Dr. Koo maintains an active translational research program supported by the National Institutes of Health studying the mechanisms underlying urinary stone disease. He leads clinical trials evaluating new
technologies to enhance surgical outcomes and patient safety during endoscopic surgery. His research has been honored with an Early Career Investigator Award from the American Urological Association and recognized by the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Koo is an editor of The Journal of Urology and Urology Practice and an editorial board member of the Canadian Journal of Urology International. He serves on numerous committees and advisory councils of the American Urological Association, Endourological Society, and American College of Surgeons. He is also a national leader in health policy and advocacy and was previously a fellow at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
