Garvan C. Kane, M.D., Ph.D.

Garvan C. Kane, M.D., Ph.D., is a consultant cardiologist who specializes in echocardiography and the management of patients with pulmonary hypertension and pericardial disease. His clinical focus includes:

• All aspects of echocardiography, including transthoracic, transesophageal and stress echo. Particular areas of interest include echocardiographic guidance of interventional procedures and the performance of echo-guided pericardiocentesis.
• Management of all aspects of pulmonary hypertensive disorders.
• The evaluation and management of acute and chronic pericardial disease.

In addition to his clinical activities, Dr. Kane is active in medical education and provides mentorship to students, residents and fellows. He co-directs the Mayo Clinic echocardiography board review course and teaches at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and at many continuing medical education meetings both nationally and internationally.

His research interests are focused on the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of all forms of pulmonary hypertension. His research focuses on evaluating the role of integration of established novel biomarkers and risk reduction for patients' pulmonary hypertension with particular focus on assessing right ventricular function. A complementary research focus is on hemodynamic rest and stress echocardiography in nonischemic disease.
