Juan A. Crestanello, M.D.

My name is Juan Crestanello. I am a cardiovascular surgeon in the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. I was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. I did all my medical training there, and then I moved to the United States. I'm excited to come back to Mayo Clinic and to be a member of such a distinguished group of cardiovascular surgeons. My clinical interests include valvular heart disease including the operations of the aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valves, either through a conventional approach, minimally invasive approach, transcatheter approach, or robotic approach. Cardiac reoperation is another area of my clinical interest, is an area of increasing growth where, as the patients get older, more and more patients require reoperation. My research interest is on the clinical outcomes after cardiac surgery, particularly, we were investigating the outcomes of patients with chronic lung disease and aortic valve replacement and transcatheter aortic valve replacements. We also look at the effect of a hyponatremia on patients before, during, and after cardiac surgery. Lastly, another area of my interest are the outcomes of patients who have multiple reoperations for endocarditis. Once a patient is diagnosed with their cardiovascular problems that require heart surgery, it puts a lot of stress and anxiety of the patient and their family. Therefore, I think that we need to be compassionate, and we are available to answer their questions as well as the questions of their family.
