Biographical summary
As a member of the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, Saranya Chumsri, M.D., sees patients with breast cancers that are among the most difficult to treat. This includes triple-negative breast cancer and HER-positive breast cancers. In her practice, Dr. Chumsri collaborates with specialists from many areas to provide integrative therapies and personalized, cutting-edge care.
Dr. Chumsri is dedicated to optimizing prevention strategies and finding a cure for breast cancer. She conducts research focused on several aspects of breast cancer, including immunotherapy, cancer vaccines, genomics, epigenetics, stem cells, and endocrine resistance. She is also researching triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of breast cancer in which cancer cells lack receptors for current drug targets for breast cancer, including HER2 and hormone (estrogen and progesterone) receptors. Her research extends to HER2-positive breast cancer, another form of aggressive breast cancer.
To predict the response to targeted therapy in breast cancer, particularly immune-related biomarkers, Dr. Chumsri is developing genomic biomarkers. She's also studying the mechanisms of resistance to targeted immunotherapy. Dr. Chumsri hopes to develop multiple novel experimental therapeutics in breast cancer, specifically focusing on immunotherapy, cancer vaccines, triple-negative breast cancer, and HER2-positive breast cancer.
By reducing breast cancer diagnoses to those "at risk" and finding targeted therapies for newly diagnosed patients, Dr. Chumsri seeks to decrease occurrence and increase survival. She also hopes to bring new and improved treatments to her patients. When appropriate and patients are eligible and willing, she may suggest participating in one of her clinical trials.
Dr. Chumsri serves on several national and institutional committees and consortiums. She stays involved in the latest research and treatment for breast cancer, particularly cutting-edge immunotherapy and cancer vaccines.
