Bedside Feature inside the Mayo Clinic Patient Portal: FAQ Document for Patients

The Bedside feature, previously a standalone app on mobile devices, is now integrated into the Mayo Clinic Patient Portal. The standalone mobile app will be retired.

The Bedside feature provides a digital option to help you stay connected to your care while you are in the hospital. You can use Bedside to access up-to-date health information, such as test results, medications, and your daily schedule. Also, you can complete questionnaires and review educational materials — all from your smartphone.

The FAQ below provides more information about Bedside:

    • The Bedside feature in your Mayo Clinic Patient Portal provides timely, easy-to-understand information to help you stay informed and engaged in your care.
      Through Bedside, you can:

      • Review test results and medications.
      • Receive diagnosis- or treatment-specific education materials.
      • Learn about your care team and their roles.
      • Prepare for conversations with your care team.
      • Complete questionaries.

Your healthcare team will always be available to answer any questions you may have.

    • When you are admitted to a Mayo Clinic hospital, the Bedside feature will appear in your patient portal account. You receive a text message on your smartphone upon admission when Bedside is available.

To access the Bedside feature, log in on your mobile device or Bedside tablet. Locate the Bedside feature by tapping the banner, “While you’re here for care.” After your first Bedside visit, the banner changes to “Switch to Bedside.”

    • Yes. Your healthcare team remains available to answer any questions you may have. The Bedside feature offers an additional digital option to track your care during your hospital stay.

    • When you are admitted to a Mayo Clinic hospital, your electronic health record is updated to show that you are receiving care at one of our hospitals. When you log in to your Mayo Clinic Patient Portal account, your hospital stay details are securely stored and automatically updated in the Bedside feature. This allows you to follow your care.

    • You decide how you want to use Bedside. Your care team is here to support you, with or without it.

    • In some locations, a Mayo Clinic Bedside tablet may be provided to you

    • “Proxy access” allows someone else (such as a parent, a spouse, an adult child, or a caregiver) to have access (full to limited) to a patient’s portal account. If authorized users have proxy access, they will first log in to their own Mayo Clinic Patient Portal account, and then they could also view most of the patient’s healthcare information from within that same account.

Those with proxy access may view Bedside information (sometimes full access, sometimes limited), and they could potentially help complete questionnaires or review educational materials for the patient.

    • Parents or guardians with proxy access to the teenager’s portal account can use Bedside. However, depending on permission levels, they may not have access to the patient’s questionnaires or educational materials. They also may not have access to other Bedside features that may be blocked; state and federal laws limit parent/legal guardian access to certain health information for minors (for example, reproductive counseling and drug and alcohol treatment).

    • It is essential to have a secure tool that protects your information. Privacy and security are priorities at Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Clinic Patient Portal and all its features are safe and comply with health information privacy guidelines.

    • Once you are discharged, the system recognizes this change and removes the Bedside feature from your patient portal account. However, the details of your hospital stay and other healthcare information remain available in the patient portal.

    • If you do not have a patient portal account, you can create one or call Mayo Clinic Customer Assistance at 877-858-0398, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central Time.
