The Mayo Clinic Program in Professionalism and Values (PPV) leads in the perpetuation of:
- Our Mayo Model of Professionalism.
- Education on Mayo Clinic's primary value and core values and their importance.
- Mayo Clinic's values-driven culture.
- The impact of our dedication to these values in all practice, education and research activities across every Mayo campus.
Education and Training
The PPV education program provides extensive opportunities for discussions on professionalism at Mayo Clinic, defined as putting our values into action.
- Discussions include staff in all roles, and across practice, education and research.
- The discussion occurs early — even at the recruitment stage — during onboarding, and throughout a staff member's career.
- For the physician/scientist staff, the program provides education at each stage of their development:
- In medical school.
- During residency.
- Through fellowship post-doctoral training.
- Into consultant positions.
Communication in Healthcare Program
PPV provides an opportunity for clinical staff to discover and practice effective, evidence-based communication techniques in a clinical environment.
Seminars and Conferences
PPV fields frequent requests for professionalism, values, and culture seminars and conference participation from across all of Mayo Clinic and the Mayo Clinic Care Network.
The program has extended its reach with presentations on Mayo Clinic's Model of Professionalism, and on exploring how values are lived out at Mayo Clinic.
Professionalism Consultations
PPV professionalism consultations provide a mechanism for staff and trainees to reflect upon and continuously improve their professionalism, to best serve patients and to thrive in their Mayo Clinic careers.
Mayo Clinic Values Council
The Mayo Clinic Values Council's mission is to promote our values across all of Mayo Clinic, and to perpetuate the Franciscan Legacy on Saint Marys Campus as well as across the institution.
Extensive individual and group resources have been developed by the Values Council centered around:
- Values education.
- Facilitated work-unit values reviews.
- Values research.
- The values recognition program for individual staff members.
- The perpetuation of Mayo Clinic's Franciscan legacy.
PPV Scholarly Activity
PPV is involved in scholarly work in multiple areas:
- Medical professionalism.
- Communication in healthcare.
- Institutional values.
- Mayo Clinic culture.
This work leads to presentations locally, regionally and nationally as well as peer-reviewed publications of abstracts and manuscripts related to this work.
Our ongoing institutional dedication to our primary value and our core values is a key differentiator for Mayo Clinic.
