有些卵巢囊肿可能与生育能力的降低有关。然而，具体将取决于卵巢囊肿的类型。

影响生育能力的卵巢囊肿包括：

子宫内膜异位瘤。子宫内膜异位症表示正常应衬于宫腔内的组织（子宫内膜）生长在子宫外，而子宫内膜异位瘤则是由子宫内膜异位症所引起的囊肿。这些卵巢囊肿可能与生育问题有关。
多囊卵巢综合征引起的卵巢囊肿。多囊卵巢综合征（PCOS）的特征是卵巢上有很多小囊肿、月经不规律以及某些激素水平过高。PCOS 与排卵不规律有关，可能导致一些女性出现生育能力问题。

以下类型的卵巢囊肿一般不会影响生育能力：

功能性囊肿。功能性囊肿（例如卵泡囊肿或黄体囊肿）是卵巢囊肿最常见的类型。功能性囊肿是在正常月经周期内形成，不会引起或导致不孕不育症。事实上，功能性囊肿实际上表明导致生育的必要功能正在发生。
囊腺瘤。囊腺瘤是卵巢表面生长的肿瘤。虽然可能需要治疗，但不会影响生育能力。
皮样囊肿。这些固体囊肿包含皮肤、毛发甚至牙齿等组织，而非液体。皮样囊肿与不孕不育症无关。
