Biographical summary
The clinical practice and research of Bernardo Mendes, M.D., complements his focus and fellowship training in the treatment of complex abdominal, thoracoabdominal and aortic arch aneurysms. Dr. Mendes joined the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Mayo Clinic in 2012 as a Research Fellow under the mentorship of Dr. Gustavo Oderich, with focus on endovascular aortic aneurysms. He joined the vascular surgery integrated residency program at Mayo Clinic in 2013, during which time he received a number of honors, including the Fellow Teacher of the Year Award in 2018, and the Mayo Brothers Distinguished Fellowship Award in 2017, the highest honor a trainee can receive at Mayo Clinic, which recognizes the qualities associated with the Mayo Clinic founders, Drs. William J. and Charles H. Mayo, based on outstanding clinical performance, humanitarianism and scholarly activity. He joined the faculty in 2018 and was named Associate Professor of Surgery in 2022, and currently is the Program Director of the Advanced Aortic Fellowship and Associate Program Director of the Fellowship and Integrated Residency programs. His overall research goal is to develop the safest and most durable treatment for patients with aortic aneurysms, particularly using endovascular techniques.
