Frequently Asked Questions

What is my role as a Summer III Nursing Externship participant at Mayo Clinic?

You have the opportunity to expand your nursing and critical thinking skills while working alongside multiple RN clinical coaches. The Minnesota Nurse Practice Act prohibits unlicensed employees from performing duties that require a license, so Summer III externs are not permitted to administer medications or IV therapy during their time in the externship.

I'm an international student. Would I qualify to participate in the Summer III Nursing Externship?

Unfortunately, no. All Summer III participants must have authorization to work in the U.S. in the event of future employment after the program. The inpatient setting of Mayo Clinic does not provide sponsorship for employment. Due to special federal rules regarding immigration and the nursing profession, policies for nurse sponsorship are distinct from those of other allied health positions.

What will I be expected to wear for the externship?

Uniforms at Mayo Clinic serve as a means of identification. To create a professional impression of both you and Mayo Clinic, uniforms should be clean, neat, modest and well-fitting.

Employees are responsible for the purchase and care of their own uniforms. Details about uniform and dress code requirements will be provided by late March.

When will I learn if I've been accepted into the externship?

Notifications are processed in late February.

Where and what shift will I be working?

If you are selected to participate in the externship, specific information about work area placement will be sent in late March.

Mayo Clinic nurses have unparalleled career opportunities in more than 60 inpatient and outpatient specialties. Summer IIIs will not be assigned to all of these areas but may have opportunities throughout the program to participate in scheduled observations of these areas.

What Basic Life Support (BLS) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification is accepted to participate in the Summer III Nursing Externship?

The Department of Nursing at Mayo Clinic will only accept these certifications:

  • American Heart Association (title: BLS for Healthcare Providers)
  • Red Cross (title: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers)
  • Military Training Network

Your certification must be valid for at least three months after you begin employment.
