College volunteers are age 18 or older and currently enrolled in a college or university. A commitment of one shift per week, for a minimum of 10-weeks within one semester annually is required.
Minnesota law requires facilities licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) to complete applicant background studies on all individuals who have direct patient contact. This two-step process includes verification of identity, submission of a photograph and fingerprints. In addition, Mayo Clinic also runs a second background check through Certiphi Screening, Inc.

Mayo Clinic Volunteer Programs will contact you after your application is reviewed. If selected, a placement discussion will be scheduled for you to meet with a Volunteer Manager.

Additional requirements before volunteering include:
- Completing volunteer onboarding steps including, background checks and an immunization review
- Attending new volunteer orientation
- Completing the volunteer service area training
