Do not use tobacco products for at least two months before surgery.
Nicotine, carbon monoxide and other poisons in tobacco products decrease your blood flow. Smoking also increases the risk of complications after surgery. Examples include: poor bone and wound healing, pneumonia, blood clots, and the need for more surgery.
If you use tobacco products, you must stop using all tobacco products at least two months before your surgery date. You must agree to stay nicotine-free for at least one year after surgery. It can take up to a year for bones to heal. If you need help to quit, talk to your health care provider. There is help available for you.
