Heart failure can't always be reversed. But your daily choices can help you stay healthier longer.
- Check your ankles for swelling. Call your doctor if you notice this sign of water retention.
- Weigh in each day. Call your doctor if you gain more than 4 to 5 pounds over a few days.
- Know your sodium limit. And really stick to it. Sodium makes you retain water, which is hard on your heart.
- Get serious about fats. Focus on plant-based fats like avocado and olive oil.
- Talk to your doctor before you toast. Alcohol can interact with medications, weaken your heart and trigger abnormal rhythms.
- Get moving in ways you enjoy. You'll be more likely to stick with your heart-healthy exercise plan.
- Carry a list of all your medications. You can communicate better with your care team whatever comes up.
- Track over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Talk to your doc about anything that could conflict with prescriptions or cause fluid buildup.
- Buy more pillows. Prop your head to breathe easier when you're resting and sleeping.
- Keep your doctor's phone number handy. Pay attention to your body, and tell your doctor when you're feeling worse.
