  1. Wash your hands. Clean your skin where the patch will be placed to remove lotions, creams and oils. Place the patch on cool, dry skin. Avoid placing the patch over cuts, scrapes or burned skin. Avoid placing the patch where clothes will rub.
  2. Carefully tear open the package. Do not use scissors because you could accidently damage the patch. Do not open the package until you are ready to apply the patch.
  3. Remove the patch from the package, and take off the protective liner. Some patches have a liner that is made to peel off as two pieces. Do not touch the sticky side of the patch.
  4. Press the sticky side of the patch against the skin of either your lower abdomen or upper buttocks. You may alternate placing on the right and left sides of the body. Do not alternate from front to back. See Figure 1.
  5. Press down on the patch with your fingers for 10 seconds. Be sure that the patch is attached to your skin, especially around its edges.
  6. When replacing your patch, make sure to apply the new patch to a different area. Wait at least one week before applying a patch to the same area.
  7. Your patch may be prescribed once or twice a week. Place a new patch on the same day or days each week.

When it is time to remove the patch, slowly peel it off your skin. Fold the patch in half so that the sticky sides are pressed together. Throw it in a covered garbage right away so that it is out of the reach of kids and pets.

If there is a sticky film on your skin after removing the patch, you may need to gently rub the sticky area with a washcloth.

You may take a bath, shower or swim while wearing the patch. Doing so will not affect the patch. The patch may not be as effective if you use a hot tub.

Store patches at room temperature and away from moisture and heat. Keep patches sealed in their original pouches.

Use patches for up to three months before deciding if they work.

You will likely need to have an appointment every year to have your prescription refilled.
