Infections � some of them fatal � associated with endoscope-caused CRE have led hospitals, the CDC, and, to a lesser extent, FDA and industry to implement improved methods for cleaning duodenoscopes. So far, the new measures seem to be working.

Bile acid malabsorption (BAM)) occurs in about 1 in 3 patients with IBS-D and up to 50 percent of those with functional diarrhea, yet it remains underdiagnosed. A simple, relatively inexpensive diagnostic test is likely to change that.

No consensus exists regarding the optimal imaging modality for pediatric IBD, so providers must consider several factors, including patient age, when choosing the appropriate test.

Cologuard, a noninvasive multitarget stool screening test for CRC, has been found to have a sensitivity for cancer equal to colonoscopy. But questions remain about the test's role in the CRC screening algorithm.

Most efforts to develop anti-fibrotic agents have been largely unsuccessful. But new drugs targeting different aspects of the signaling cascade that follows liver injury, now in clinical trials, may prove more effective.
