Mayo Clinic's John E. Herman Home and Treatment Facility is a residential treatment program for adults with mental illness, such as a primary diagnosis of major depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Its goal is to help residents return to the community to engage in value-driven, productive and meaningful lives.

The John E. Herman Home can inspire hope and promote health through integrated clinical practice, education and research. The team delivers an unparalleled experience with the most trusted clinical expertise and knowledge through evidence-based practices.

Program highlights include:

Supportive environment

  • State-of-the-art facility with private rooms and bathrooms.
  • 24/7 nursing care and support from a multidisciplinary team.
  • Evidence-based psychoeducation and individual and group programming.
  • Collaboration with a wide array of healthcare services, including general internal medicine and sleep medicine.
  • Skills training for engaging in productive, meaningful daily life while managing emotional and behavioral challenges.

Enhanced nursing and technician care

  • Readiness for crisis management and medical triage.
  • Support for individualized care plan and therapy goals.

Preparation for transitioning back into the community

  • Promotion of long-term healthy, active routines within the residential treatment model for successful independent living.
  • Independent medication management, meal planning and physical activities.
  • Encouragement for residents to come and go and participate in community activities.

Vocational recovery support

  • Collaboration with employment specialists and the clinical team.
  • Support for achieving competitive employment, educational opportunities and volunteer placements.

The program includes a treatment facility and two residential recovery homes in Rochester, Minnesota. Each house has eight rooms with private baths and communal spaces for cooking and gathering.

Family, provider and self-referrals are accepted. Participation, which usually lasts 3 to 6 months, is voluntary. Residents must be stable and desire to succeed in their recovery. The John E. Herman Home accepts commercial insurance and self-pay.
