Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

Signs and symptoms of too much potassium loss

  1. Dryness of mouth
  2. increased thirst
  3. irregular heartbeats
  4. mood or mental changes
  5. muscle cramps or pain
  6. weak pulse

Signs and symptoms of too much sodium loss

  1. Confusion
  2. convulsions
  3. decreased mental activity
  4. irritability
  5. muscle cramps
  6. unusual tiredness or weakness

Less common

  1. Blisters on skin
  2. chest pain
  3. general feeling of discomfort or illness or weakness
  4. joint pain
  5. numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness in hands or feet
  6. skin rash or itching
  7. sore throat and fever
  8. swelling of the lymph glands

Rare

  1. Lower back or side pain
  2. severe stomach pain with nausea and vomiting
  3. unusual bleeding or bruising
  4. yellow eyes or skin

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Diarrhea
  2. fast or irregular heartbeat
  3. headache
  4. loss of appetite
  5. nausea or vomiting

Less common

  1. Constipation
  2. decreased sexual ability
  3. dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when getting up from a lying or sitting position
  4. increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight
  5. redness or flushing of face
  6. shortness of breath with exercise or work
  7. stuffy nose
  8. watering or irritated eyes

Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.
