Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, medicines like carmustine can sometimes cause some unwanted effects such as blood problems, loss of hair, and other side effects; these are described below. Also, because of the way these medicines act on the body, there is a chance that they might cause other unwanted effects that may not occur until months or years after the medicine is used. These delayed effects may include certain types of cancer, such as leukemia. Discuss these possible effects with your doctor.

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

More common
  1. Cough
  2. pain or redness at the injection site
  3. trouble breathing
Less common
  1. Black, tarry stools
  2. blood in the urine or stools
  3. cough or hoarseness, accompanied by fever or chills
  4. fever or chills
  5. flushing of the face
  6. lower back or side pain, accompanied by fever or chills
  7. painful or difficult urination, accompanied by fever or chills
  8. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  9. sores in the mouth or on the lips
  10. unusual bleeding or bruising
  11. unusual tiredness or weakness
Rare
  1. Decrease in urination
  2. swelling of the feet or lower legs
Incidence not known
  1. Abdominal or stomach pain, severe
  2. bleeding gums
  3. bone pain
  4. chest pain
  5. cloudy urine
  6. confusion
  7. dark urine
  8. decreased frequency or amount of urine
  9. difficulty with swallowing
  10. dizziness
  11. dizziness, faintness, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
  12. dry mouth
  13. fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse
  14. feeling of warmth
  15. hives, itching, or skin rash
  16. increased blood pressure
  17. increased thirst
  18. loss of appetite
  19. nausea or vomiting
  20. pain in the lower back or side
  21. pale skin
  22. puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  23. redness of the face, neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest
  24. seizures
  25. sore throat
  26. sweating
  27. swelling of the face, fingers, or lower legs
  28. swollen glands
  29. thirst
  30. tightness in the chest
  31. troubled breathing with exertion
  32. weight gain
  33. yellow eyes or skin
Less common
  1. Diarrhea
  2. discoloration of the skin along the injection site
