Are there any safe and effective alternative treatment options for my psoriasis?
It's unclear whether any alternative treatments ease psoriasis symptoms. But some methods are considered generally safe and may improve itchy, scaly skin in some people. Alternative treatments are those used in place of or in combination with traditional medical care.
The following alternative treatments may help with psoriasis:
- Acupuncture may ease the symptoms of long-term psoriasis and may be safely used with medical treatment.
- Aloe extract cream may reduce scaling, itching and inflammation. You might need to use the cream several times a day for a month or more to see any improvement in your skin.
- Fish oil supplements combined with light therapy may ease the symptoms of psoriasis. Taking 3 grams or less of fish oil daily is generally thought to be safe.
- Indigo naturalis, also called qing dai, in oil used for nail psoriasis eased symptoms after 12 weeks, compared with oil alone.
- Curcumin, found in the spice turmeric, has been studied in patients with psoriasis. Curcumin taken by mouth may improve psoriasis symptoms when used with psoriasis medicine.
These treatments would be best for those with plaque disease. They aren't good choices for those who have pustules, arthritis, or psoriasis that covers the entire body with a peeling rash that can itch or burn, called erythrodermic psoriasis.
Talk with your health care provider if you're considering these or other dietary supplements or alternative therapies. Your care provider can help you weigh the pros and cons of specific alternative therapies and ensure that they don't interfere with your other medical treatments.
