Advanced diagnosis and treatment

Mayo Clinic surgeons have experience and expertise in a wide variety of treatment choices for pituitary tumors, including:

Mayo Clinic endocrinologists also are leaders in treating hormone-producing pituitary tumors and in providing pituitary hormone replacement therapy.

In Cushing syndrome, some pituitary adenomas that lead to too much adrenocorticotropic hormone, also known as ACTH, may be too small for detection with traditional MRI scans. Mayo Clinic's high-field, 3-tesla MRI scanner provides better viewing of these tumors.

Mayo Clinic's neuroradiologists are experienced in performing inferior petrosal sinus sampling to help find and identify pituitary tumors. This test involves taking a sample from the veins where the pituitary gland drains hormones into the bloodstream.

Mayo Clinic was among the first institutions to extensively research an endoscopic through-the-nose, or transnasal, surgical tumor removal technique. It has now become standard practice. This method is highly successful, lowers discomfort and usually requires only an overnight stay in the hospital.
