The Mayo Clinic pulmonary function laboratories offer many tests for common and rare conditions that affect the lungs and breathing. Across Mayo Clinic's three campuses in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota, the pulmonary function laboratories serve about 217 people a day and perform more than 145,000 procedures a year. The laboratories' large patient volume, advanced technology and outstanding quality assurance program contribute to Mayo Clinic's international reputation for the accurate diagnosis of respiratory disorders.
A tradition of research and innovation
The Mayo Clinic pulmonary function laboratories grew from the Department of Physiology, which in the mid-20th century transformed aviation by developing the aviator's oxygen mask, the G-suit, the oxygen bailout bottle and the "M1 maneuver." Fighter pilots used this maneuver to maintain consciousness when subjected to G-forces. The original lab and its founders developed:
- The pulse oximeter
- The flow volume curve
- The nitrogen washout method for lung volumes
- Sleep medicine methods
- Improved research methods for pulmonary function testing
Mayo continues to build on that tradition. The experts of the pulmonary function laboratories are involved in many national and international research studies.
Arizona
The Pulmonary Function Laboratory in Arizona is located in the Mayo Clinic Building on the Scottsdale campus and in the Mayo Clinic Hospital on the Phoenix Campus. The lab's services include more than 25 routine pulmonary diagnostic tests and more-specialized procedures.
Florida
The Pulmonary Function Laboratory in Florida is located on the seventh floor of Davis Building, provides more than 22 routine and diagnostic tests and many specialized procedures in a 5,000-square-foot space consisting of 12 procedure rooms, including:
- Eight pulmonary function testing rooms
- One arterial blood sampling room
- One cardiopulmonary exercise laboratory
Minnesota
The Pulmonary Function Laboratory in Minnesota is the largest and busiest in North America. It's located on the 18th floor of the Gonda Building, provides more than 25 routine pulmonary diagnostic tests and many more specialized procedures in a 10,000-square-foot space consisting of 24 procedure rooms, including:
- 13 pulmonary function testing rooms
- Five arterial blood sampling rooms
- Two cardiopulmonary exercise laboratories
Pulmonary rehabilitation in Minnesota. In conjunction with the Healthy Lifestyle Program, the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine offers a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program for people who experience breathing problems as a result of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma and other chronic lung conditions.
Spirometry training in Minnesota. The Mayo Clinic Pulmonary Function Laboratory provides spirometry training certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
