Every year our neurovascular (cerebrovascular) experts treat thousands of people with serious and complex conditions of the brain, blood vessels and nerves. This includes more than 1,300 people with AVMs, 700 people with brain AVMs, 5,300 people with carotid artery disease and 180 people with moyamoya disease. In addition, our neurosurgeons perform more than 9,000 procedures for stroke and other cerebrovascular conditions each year.

  • American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for care. Mayo Clinic specialists co-chaired the AHA guidelines on caring for subarachnoid hemorrhages and on care for unruptured aneurysms.
  • Top-tier stroke centers. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota; Jacksonville, Florida; and Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona, are each certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center — Arizona and Florida per Det Norske Veritas and Minnesota per The Joint Commission. Both are organizations that evaluate and accredit hospitals and staff. The Mayo Clinic Health System sites in Eau Claire and La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Mankato, Minnesota, are certified as Primary Stroke Centers by The Joint Commission. Mayo Clinic in Arizona, Florida and Minnesota have achievement awards from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines Stroke program.
