The Children's Bureau of the Department of Health and Human Services reported these alarming 2019 national statistics:
- On average in the United States, every day more than five children died of abuse and neglect, but the actual number is likely higher, due in part to underreporting.
- Almost 80 percent of these deaths were caused by a parent.
- More than 75 percent of the reported victims were under four years of age.
Report child abuse — it's the law
If you have reasons to believe a child may be a victim of physical, sexual, emotional abuse or neglect, you are required by law to report it immediately to the local child protective service office or law enforcement.
