ROCHESTER, Minn. — A compilation of poetry, Gifts of her Spirit, written by Sister Mary Brigh Cassidy, Order of Saint Francis, administrator of Saint Marys Hospital from 1949 to 1971 has recently been published. A strong administrator with significant business acumen, Sister Mary Brigh had a quiet and reflective side illustrated in the poetry she wrote throughout her lifetime.
A sampling of this multi-dimensioned woman's poetry has been selected for publication by Sister Lauren Weinandt, OSF in Rochester and Jane Campion, an emeritus administrator of Mayo Clinic. "Sister Mary Brigh's poetry reflects a woman given to introspection and thoughtful observation of the people and places around her," says Sister Lauren. "She shares stories of patients and colleagues, and her observations of nature and her deep spirituality are significant and prayerful."
With the encouragement and financial support of the Saint Marys Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers, which Sister Mary Brigh founded, the two editors have produced a volume of poetry with universal appeal. Included are early photos of Sister Mary Brigh and a brief biography describing her journey from her home in Eyota (including her place on the Eyota High School girls basketball team) to nursing school in Rochester to completion of an MBA from the University of Chicago to her service at Saint Marys Hospital.
The book is available in the Saint Marys Hospital gift shop, the Assisi Heights gift shop and at ARTPACKS in the Marriott Hotel subway. Profits from the sale of the book go to the Sisters of Saint Francis retirement fund.
